The CuroLegal team is excited to announce the launch of our latest project, Veterans Legal Checkup, in collaboration with ARAG Legal Insurance and the American Bar Association.

The Veterans Legal Checkup is the first iteration of a mobile-first web application that is aimed at helping people identify if a situation in their life is a legal issue with a legal remedy, and to help identify easy, actionable steps to obtain that remedy.

In 2016, the ABA Commission on the Future of Legal Services released its Report on the Future of Legal Services in the United States (available here), recommending the use of checkups as a way to close the access to justice gap.  This report and this effort recognize that one of the major barriers for individuals to access justice is the inability to identify an issue as being a legal issue.

Notably, the Legal Services Corporation recently issued a report entitled The Justice Gap: Measuring the Unmet Civil Legal Needs of Low-income Americans.  In that study, LSC found that veterans only seek professional legal help for 21% of problems. The top reasons for not seeking legal help are as follows: didn’t know where to look (29%), decided to deal with problem on own (25%), and wasn’t sure if legal (18%).  Veterans Legal Checkups aims to provide a solution to these exact issues.

Through this free Legal Checkup web application, Curo and its partners are seeking to create a demand for justice.
